IBM Snags Patent On Half-Day Off of Work Notifications

0

theodp writes "The USPTO appears to have lowered the bar on obviousness, awarding a patent to IBM Tuesday for its System for Portion of a Day Out of Office Notification. 'Out of office features in existing applications such as Lotus Notes, IBM Workplace, and Microsoft Outlook all implement a way to take a number of days off from one day to many days,' acknowledges purported patent reformer Big Blue. 'Yet, none of these applications contain the feature of letting a person take a half-day or in more general terms, x days and x hours off.' Eureka! And yes, the invention is every bit as obvious as you can imagine."

IBM Helps Google Pad Its Patent Portfolio

It looks as though Google decided to treat itself to a holiday bonus by splurging on over 200 patents belonging to IBM. The latest round of patents run the gamut from wireless phone technologies to JavaScript widgets, as well as one that could be used to bolster its social networking service, Google+. This particular patent -- U.S. Patent 7,865,592 -- describes "Using semantic networks to develop a social network."

More specifically, the patent describes "a method, apparatus, and program product are provided for identifying common interests between users of a communication network." One example of how it could work is "by calculating the ratio of the number of words in a content source to the time spent viewing the content."

The patent grab was discovered by SEO By The Sea blog and confirmed by Mashable. Google already purchased over 2,000 patents from IBM in 2011, as well as acquired Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion, a move that was largely motivated by Motorola's more than 24,000 patents. Having all these patents gives Google a path to producing new products, but more importantly, will help fend off lawsuits against Android.

Google buoys its patent portfolio with 217 more filings acquired from IBM

It's not quite as big as some previous patent transactions between the two companies, but it looks like Google did a fair bit more shopping from IBM's vast portfolio at the tail-end of 2011. As noted by the SEO by the Sea blog, IBM transferred 188 granted patents and 28 published patent applications to Google during the last week of the year, including a number of patents related to phones and web browsers. Unfortunately, other key details like an acquisition price remain a mystery, but you can peruse some of the patents themselves at the source link below.

For years many people thought that if you had a Mac or a Linux based PC, that you were safe from most, if not all malicious activity on the internet. Now we are learning that isn’t quite true anymore. Here is what IBM’s report had to say:
