Google Drops Microsoft Windows

Google is phasing out the internal use of Microsoft’s ubiquitous Windows operating system because of security concerns, according to several Google employees.

The directive to move to other operating systems began in earnest in January, afterGoogle’s Chinese operations were hacked, and could effectively end the use of Windows at Google, which employs more than 10,000 workers internationally.

“We’re not doing any more Windows. It is a security effort,” said one Google employee.

“Many people have been moved away from [Windows] PCs, mostly towards Mac OS, following the China hacking attacks,” said another.

New hires are now given the option of using Apple’s Mac computers or PCs running the Linux operating system. “Linux is open source and we feel good about it,” said one employee. “Microsoft we don’t feel so good about.”

Automatic Printer Switcher

Automatic Printer Switcher maps different default printers to different programs, so you can skip the step of switching to the printer you want every time you print from a different application.

The idea behind the app is pretty simple: Let’s say you’ve got a laser printer that you generally print Word documents to, and a color printer where you generally send your photos for printing. Just map your programs to the printer you will more often than not use it with, and Automatic Printer Switcher will monitor active windows and swap the default printer depending on what application you’re printing from.

Automatic Printer Switcher is a free download for Windows only.

Windows 7 Reliability Monitor

Being away from Windows made me miss out on some of its functionality and today, I discovered a tool called “Reliability Monitor” that can actually be quite helpful in troubleshooting your PC.

Reliability Monitor basically records any hardware and software problems/changes that have occurred on your PC and based on that, provides an index that ranges from 1 to 10 with 10 being the most reliable. You can launch it by clicking on the start menu and type reliability which bring a result to “View reliability history” on which you can click.
